Olde Thompson 5-1/2-Inch Bavaria Peppermill Review

(More customer reviews)I had a tough time finding salt and pepper mills that I liked because they fall into a strange gray area in kitchen devices. Most are either cheap-o plastic jobs that look... well, like cheap-o plastic jobs, or they're those 2 foot tall wooden chess piece lookin' things. I just wanted ones that looked nice, were normal sized for a dining table, and didn't require batteries.

This product fit the bill almost perfectly in every way.Pros:
The mill looks great. The container is glassy instead of plasticy, and the brushed stainless top looks very nice.

The grinder is on the top instead of the bottom, and it has a metal cap to cover it. This means that the loose grinds don't fall out of the bottom and onto your otherwise clean table.

Contrary to the other review, the adjustable grider is perfect. Turn a little plastic knob on the grinder and you get powder fine grinds. At a more coarse setting you will of course get a mix of some fine and some coarse grinds, but that's pretty much how every grinder works.

Did I mention that this thing looks and feels great?Cons:
The mill is just slightly too large for me. (It's about 2 times the size of a regular salt shaker you'd find at any given diner). It's not a big problem at all, but I would have liked it to be just a bit smaller.

As one review of the salt mill noted, the actual grinder doesn't look very attactive. The end of the screw that is the adjustment knob goes clear through the knob, so you see about an eighth of an inch of screw sticking out. Kinda weird since all they had to do was put the knob on the END of the screw and the whole thing would have been hidden. Again, this is not a make or break issue at all, and I only mention it for the purposes of full disclosure.Note:
The salt mill and the pepper mill are not the same. The salt mill has some sort of ceramic-looking grinder and does not grind as fine as the pepper mill (which is chrome). I like my salt and pepper powder fine, so I just bought two pepper mills and filled one with kosher salt. Perfecto.

(More customer reviews)I've had my set for almost 3 1/2 years.The pepper mill just broke, so I'm now searching for a replacement set.(There's a black plastic piece inside that seems to turn the peppercorns to move them further down into the teeth to be ground. That piece broke and the grinder no longer works very well.)

The pros:
- The top of the pepper mill unscrews to fill
- you can adjust how coarse/fine you want your pepper
- looks good

The cons:
- You constantly have to tighten the screw on the pepper mill to keep the grind where you want it (not really an issue for me, but may be for others...)
- salt leaks out the bottom of the shaker
- you have to fill the salt shaker from the bottom, meaning you have to cover the holes on the top to avoid spilling all the salt you're putting in
- material is some sort of plastic, which feels cheap to me

Overall, it's an okay set, but I think I will find a different set for the next ones I get

(More customer reviews)The Olde Thompson 7-Inch Del Norte Peppermill and Salt Shaker Set is a very nice set that performs well.I searched a long time for a pepper mill, and found that the cost of most decent qualtiy models locally was near the cost of this set.So in the end I took the plunge.

The peppercorns that are included with this are very high quality.They will run out quickly with daily use, so buy some early to have on hand.

The only real caveat I have is that some people prefer this type of set with the salt shaker and some might like the salt grinder.I originally thought the salt shaker was good enough for me. After buying a different version by olde thompson that included the salt grinder, I wish I would have gotten them both that way.Most people won't notice the difference but the ground sea salt has a very subtle taste that is harder to *over-salt*.

Other than that, this is a great value.The metal ends give you nice stability and something to turn when grinding.

(More customer reviews)We saw these when we were building our wedding registry and thought they were absolutely adorable!You squeeze the ears to grind & dispense the salt & pepper.They're a great idea, but not perfectly implemented.The shakers are rather balanced and thus don't stand up very well, so they're not great for table use (we use the magnet on the back to keep on the fridge).Also, since they dispense on the bottom of shaker, they leave some salt/pepper residue on the table.

Five stars for awesome cuteness (my husband likes them even better than I do!), minus two stars for impractical design, plus one star because really, did I mention how goshdarn cute they are??

(More customer reviews)This is a vast improvement over the earlier model.However, after a time the handle can pop out of alignment if squeezed too fully, this is caused by the lever that pushes the grinding plate rod disengaging from the socket atop the rod.Not fully squeezing the rod seeems to avoid this problem.To realign the lever with the rod socket, unscrew the lid, allow the handles to open and then tighten the lid.

Reading about the design of this pepper mill had me very intrigued.Some of the features that caught my attention, the pepper comes out the top of the unit, no more pepper all over the counter due to pepper grounds falling out the bottom where most units discharge the grindings.Being battery powered, you only need to tip the bottom up to have a nice flow of pepper dispense out the top.A very simple design that really is useful.

Quality:Well, this is where this unit falls a little short.It really is a shame. If this design were made more durable it would be a have to have product.The area of most concern is the drive motor module to pepper mill body interface.The instructions warn not to over fill the mill with unground pepper.If you do you stand a chance of causing the motor module not to seat properly into the mill body allowing it to spin in the housing.Doing this just once, will cause the little plastic nobbies to wear off that secure the drive motor.This in turn will render the unit useless. The body of this unit is plastic.Not that there is anything wrong with plastic, I just don't think it was originally designed for plastic and the loads on the drive system seem way to high for the plastic interface.If it were made of just about any metal I don't think there would be an issue.

Filling Unit: This can be a little tricky.You fill the unit with peppercorns from the bottom.Take care to rotate the base a few degrees in the direction indicated to remove the base.Tip it upside down with the bottom facing up.Pull out the motor module using the pull ring.Add peppercorns to just below the full mark.Reinstall motor module making sure that it fully engages the grinder and that it seats all the way down.Reinstall the base and you should be ready to grind.

Color:This unit can be purchased in many colors including chrome.Even the chrome is made of plastic however.

Pricing:The price for the unit seems fair as long as it keeps working.I've had mine for about two weeks now.I will post an update as time goes by.

Conclusion:I really like the design and how the unit works.I'm glad I purchased it so far.I will take special care at filling the unit NOT to OVER FILL it. I would highly recommend to anyone that has a love of useful and very unique kitchen gadgets.

WMF Deluxe Empty Ceramill Review

(More customer reviews)I have been looking for a great pepper/salt mill for a while.I have purchased the battery operated versions by WMF and other manufacturers and have found them great but wanted something that didn't require me to keep changing the battery and had a larger capacity.I frequently use various different salts and peppers in my cooking and some of them require grinding so need a number of mills to handle this.That being said let me get down to the review.

Looks:
The product looks amazing.The build quality is top notch with heavy duty glass and metal construction.It does not feel cheap at all and contributes to the value greatly.

Usability:
The mill sits grinder up meaning that the as you can see in the picture the glass portion rests on the counter.A simple unscrew operation lets you add more content into the storage container which is very easy.Te top has a cap that needs to be removed which has a rubber seal again very easy to operate.I have used these mills with rock salts and various peppers (black, and blends).I have noticed that the control mechanism for the grinder setting (determining how fine the grind coming out is) is a bit tricky to use mid grind.Meaning I grind some of the salt/pepper and then change the coarseness of the grind, it can be tricky especially if there are particles still in the grind mechanism.I would be watchful.As a note this only was a problem with some of the harder salts that I have.

Overall:
I wish I could give the product 4.5 stars as that is the true score but I cant give it 5 knowing that the issue with the grinding control exists with the harder salts and the usage pattern of changing the coarseness of the grind mid grind is a common one.

I would purchase this again in a heartbeat and plan to buy more as my needs expand.At the moment I have 2 and 1 battery operated WMF grinder and plan to stick with this moving forward.
