(More customer reviews)I spotted this pepper mill on the TV reality show "Flipping Out" and wanted one instantly. I first found it at Crate & Barrel for $20. I was happy to find a set of both salt & pepper mills for $30 here. I gave a couple of sets to "foodies" as Christmas presents this year. The only reason I am grading 4-stars is for functionality. The thumb gear is a little tough for a woman to manage, otherwise I'd give them 5-stars for style.

Olde Thompson 5-1/2-Inch Bavaria Peppermill Review

(More customer reviews)I had a tough time finding salt and pepper mills that I liked because they fall into a strange gray area in kitchen devices. Most are either cheap-o plastic jobs that look... well, like cheap-o plastic jobs, or they're those 2 foot tall wooden chess piece lookin' things. I just wanted ones that looked nice, were normal sized for a dining table, and didn't require batteries.

This product fit the bill almost perfectly in every way.Pros:
The mill looks great. The container is glassy instead of plasticy, and the brushed stainless top looks very nice.

The grinder is on the top instead of the bottom, and it has a metal cap to cover it. This means that the loose grinds don't fall out of the bottom and onto your otherwise clean table.

Contrary to the other review, the adjustable grider is perfect. Turn a little plastic knob on the grinder and you get powder fine grinds. At a more coarse setting you will of course get a mix of some fine and some coarse grinds, but that's pretty much how every grinder works.

Did I mention that this thing looks and feels great?Cons:
The mill is just slightly too large for me. (It's about 2 times the size of a regular salt shaker you'd find at any given diner). It's not a big problem at all, but I would have liked it to be just a bit smaller.

As one review of the salt mill noted, the actual grinder doesn't look very attactive. The end of the screw that is the adjustment knob goes clear through the knob, so you see about an eighth of an inch of screw sticking out. Kinda weird since all they had to do was put the knob on the END of the screw and the whole thing would have been hidden. Again, this is not a make or break issue at all, and I only mention it for the purposes of full disclosure.Note:
The salt mill and the pepper mill are not the same. The salt mill has some sort of ceramic-looking grinder and does not grind as fine as the pepper mill (which is chrome). I like my salt and pepper powder fine, so I just bought two pepper mills and filled one with kosher salt. Perfecto.

High end salt grinders use a NYLON grinder (not plastic as indicated again by the reviewer).This is one great mill that matches the pepper mill in highest quality.

I tried a Peugeot:
Is anything coming out?
Nope...
Hmm...adjust the knob, maybe?
Nope...
Try shaking it, maybe?
Nope...

Then came a William Bounds model.Even on the fine setting, the salt came out in clumps.

Finally I got this Kyocera, and voila!A nice, even spray of salt.Was that too much to ask?Thank you, Kyocera.

William Bounds Key Salt Mill Review

(More customer reviews)Have had this mill for two days, used it about 5 times. First, good part. It grinds salt and looks cute. And that' about it. Problems? Aside it arriving with multiple cracks on the bottom piece that hold the grinder, major multiple design flaws that make using this mill a horror story. 1. The size and shape of the mill make you hold onto its body which is tapered up toward the coarseness adjusting ring. The ring is spring loaded toward the bottom and that's how it adjusts coarseness by lifting the ceramic part from the stainless steel casing and opening up the grinding mechanism. The shape makes your holding hand push up the adjusting ring which releases unground salt particles. Bad shape for holding for the size. 2. The metal turning arm is in contact with the rotating adjustment ring to the bottom and with the locking knob on top. When you turn the arm both of those move as well automatically changing the coarseness for you or loosening the top knob. 3. The knob on the crank doesn't turn so when you crank it's not smooth and uncomfortable to grind more than a little bit. 4. The size of crank arm is too short making the crank jerky. Overall not smooth. Pass this.

That's about it. I'm sending this one back. Can't stand how it's designed.

I have not a single thing to complain about , and I am EXTREMELY picky when it comes to quality.I have sent my share of merchandise back due to inferior quality.So when I say this is a great product--that is an understatement.

The reviewer before me gave four stars yet says that hardly any salt comes out??? After numerous attempts at differing adjustments and degrees of wetness it still would not work. Even slamming it on the counter top and improving my vocabulary produced no salt. Stupid me, I pitched the box et al or this puppy would be in transit on it's way for a refund. Don't blow $50 on this item!
