I was happy to find a set of both salt & pepper mills for $30 here. I gave a couple of sets to "foodies" as Christmas presents this year. The only reason I am grading 4-stars is for functionality. The thumb gear is a little tough for a woman to manage, otherwise I'd give them 5-stars for style.

Olde Thompson 5-1/2-Inch Bavaria Peppermill Review

(More customer reviews)I had a tough time finding salt and pepper mills that I liked because they fall into a strange gray area in kitchen devices. Most are either cheap-o plastic jobs that look... well, like cheap-o plastic jobs, or they're those 2 foot tall wooden chess piece lookin' things. I just wanted ones that looked nice, were normal sized for a dining table, and didn't require batteries.

This product fit the bill almost perfectly in every way.Pros:
The mill looks great. The container is glassy instead of plasticy, and the brushed stainless top looks very nice.

The grinder is on the top instead of the bottom, and it has a metal cap to cover it. This means that the loose grinds don't fall out of the bottom and onto your otherwise clean table.

Contrary to the other review, the adjustable grider is perfect. Turn a little plastic knob on the grinder and you get powder fine grinds. At a more coarse setting you will of course get a mix of some fine and some coarse grinds, but that's pretty much how every grinder works.

Did I mention that this thing looks and feels great?Cons:
The mill is just slightly too large for me. (It's about 2 times the size of a regular salt shaker you'd find at any given diner). It's not a big problem at all, but I would have liked it to be just a bit smaller.

As one review of the salt mill noted, the actual grinder doesn't look very attactive. The end of the screw that is the adjustment knob goes clear through the knob, so you see about an eighth of an inch of screw sticking out. Kinda weird since all they had to do was put the knob on the END of the screw and the whole thing would have been hidden. Again, this is not a make or break issue at all, and I only mention it for the purposes of full disclosure.Note:
The salt mill and the pepper mill are not the same. The salt mill has some sort of ceramic-looking grinder and does not grind as fine as the pepper mill (which is chrome). I like my salt and pepper powder fine, so I just bought two pepper mills and filled one with kosher salt. Perfecto.

Then came a William Bounds model.Even on the fine setting, the salt came out in clumps.

Finally I got this Kyocera, and voila!A nice, even spray of salt.Was that too much to ask?Thank you, Kyocera.

(More customer reviews)We saw these when we were building our wedding registry and thought they were absolutely adorable!You squeeze the ears to grind & dispense the salt & pepper.They're a great idea, but not perfectly implemented.The shakers are rather balanced and thus don't stand up very well, so they're not great for table use (we use the magnet on the back to keep on the fridge).Also, since they dispense on the bottom of shaker, they leave some salt/pepper residue on the table.

Five stars for awesome cuteness (my husband likes them even better than I do!), minus two stars for impractical design, plus one star because really, did I mention how goshdarn cute they are??

It was packaged only in a bag that had then been placed in a same sized Amazon box with puffpak. Vic Firth not ensuring damage protection loses a star. We still put some peppercorns in to try it and it is a world class mill, grinding either chunk or dust effortlessly. The finish is uniformly smooth, like wet nail polish, and the height makes it a real eye catcher.

(More customer reviews)I got both salt and pepper mills and am very happy with them.They're identical except that the salt mill has a silver body and the pepper mill has a black one.

Operation is great - you just flip it over and it starts grinding.Since the opening is on the top, it also doesn't leave any mess on my counter, unlike conventional mills.I love that I can keep these by the stove for cooking, then move them to the table for serving.They look at home in both settings and work great for either setting.They're large and easy to hold, especially the pepper mill with it's rubberized black base.My father has arthritis and couldn't dream of using a manual mill, but these are no problem.

They put out a good quantity of ground salt/pepper and the grind is fairly easy to adjust. I found that it helps a lot to have the mill running when making the grind finer since the coarse chunks still in the grinding wheels will prevent them from being tightened very much.

Using six batteries, as others have mentioned, is weird because you can't buy six batteries.Fortunately, if you buy both mills, you'll need twelve batteries and that's a multiple of four and that works out fine.I bought some four packs of the rechargable Sanyo Eneloop batteries to power mine and they still haven't run down after about a year (love Eneloops btw, consider using them if you want rechargables).

Filling the mill and replacing the batteries both involve removing the bottom and pulling out the battery holder.At that point you can swap in new batteries or pour in more salt/pepper and put the thing back together.The biggest problem is that you have to flip it over to do this and flipping it over is also what activates the grinding motor.So you have to unlock the bottom cap first then flip it, and reverse that procedure when putting it back together.Or you just have to wipe up a little salt or pepper.Either way, it's never bothered me but it's worth noting.It's also easy to overfill and you can't get it back together if you do, but I only have to pour a little out when I do and everything is fine.

PS - I used to scoff at the idea of a salt mill, thinking "WTF? It's not like salt goes bad or is better when freshly-ground!"Then I started using coarse sea salt regularly and realized that sometimes I needed salt with a finer grind for better texture or faster dissolving.And that's what a salt mill is great for :)

(More customer reviews)This is a vast improvement over the earlier model.However, after a time the handle can pop out of alignment if squeezed too fully, this is caused by the lever that pushes the grinding plate rod disengaging from the socket atop the rod.Not fully squeezing the rod seeems to avoid this problem.To realign the lever with the rod socket, unscrew the lid, allow the handles to open and then tighten the lid.

However, do not expect much control over the granularity of your pepper.

I tested by setting out a white paper towel and setting the grid level using the knob to six different settings.

There is *very* little difference from coarse to fine...and fine contains chunks of pepper.

Peugeot Nancy 7-Inch Acrylic Salt Mill Review

(More customer reviews)This item seems to work with the salt that comes in it - it isn't very coarse.But, as mentioned by another reviewer (that I should have read first!) it doesn't work on Pink Himalyan. The product directions packed with the product, but not mentioned online, list a lot of things including Pink salt that it should not be used with.

The quality doesn't seem to me to be as advertised because there is very little selection possible on the fineness of the salt when grinding it - even with the salt that accompanied the unit.It will not grind as coarsely as common table sale, for example.Virtually no adjustment to the coarseness of the grind.

For me, this item proved to be useless.If you get it - be certain to use nothing larger than a medium sized salt in it - coarse just won't work.
