(More customer reviews)My son gave his mother the Buzz Revolution pepper/salt mill because she has lost some function in her hands and because she loves fresh pepper on her food. (As a pepper lover, she generally prefers freshly ground for most western dishes, but likes pre-ground for many Oriental dishes.) All three of us thought the device would be useful, but we weren't prepared for how well it worked for all three of us.
It is simple to use -- just tip it over and the grinder starts, dropping the pepper in a small spray. The light makes it easy to see where more pepper is needed. When you're finished, just turn it over and put it back on the table, where it adds a slightly industrial, modern note to the decor.
The mill has five settings for finest to coarsest grind and it is easy to change the grind from one to another grind. The mill holds about an ounce and a half of large peppercorns.
Cole and Mason specialize in salt and pepper mills, and they enjoy a good reputation among many of my friends who have used their mills in homes and restaurants. However, the warranty is pretty limited: "Buzz Electronic Mills have a 12 month guarantee on the grinding mechanism and body. Unfortunately, we do not hold spare parts for these mills nor can be they repaired. If you have a problem with a mill within the 12 month guarantee period, you should return it to the retailer along with the original sales receipt as proof of purchase." (This is the only negative we can find with this device.)
A second unit can be used to grind rock salt, but the cautions on the packaging and on the Cole and Mason website suggest that usage is problemmatic.
"Always use Sea Salt Crystals. We recommend using Maldon Sea Salt Crystals or our own brand of salt, Cole & Mason. Rock Salt will wear down the mechanism very quickly, as it is too harsh for our mills. Although on many makes of Rock Salt packaging it will state that this type of salt is suitable for all grinders, this is not the case with Cole & Mason Mills. Likewise, the use of Sea Salt Flakes is not recommended as this type of salt will coagulate within the mechanism and will cause the grinder to fail. Also do not use any type of salt that is of a `moist' consistency or texture ie French Sal de Mer, as this type of salt will also coagulate in the mill. All salt must be free flowing and kept in a dry atmosphere."
There aren't similar warning about the different types of pepper on either the packaging or on the website. The only point they make: "Finely ground particles of salt or pepper will be produced inside a mill during the grinding process. These particles will fall to the bottom of the mill and may come out as a fine 'dust' once you have finished grinding. Always shake your mills after grinding to remove excess grounds, which also helps keep the grinders free for the next time you use the mill."
All three of us have enjoyed using this pepper mill over the past month, actually more and more as its simplicity and elegance delight us -- it is so much fun to use something that does its job so well. And, the company delights us as well. I've attached a recipe it posted on its website, which uses pepper but doesn't suggest the use of a Cole and Mason Pepper Mill. Delicious, too.
This mill has found an honored place on our table.

Product Description:
Cole and Mason, the leading Brand of salt and pepper mills worldwide, is synonymous with innovative design, product performance, and quality. Our extensive range of mills, from traditional to contemporary, has something to suit every table setting.Cole and Mason's standard mills are fitted with patented mechanisms, stainless steel for pepper and nylon for salt. Our Gourmet mills feature machine cut hardened carbon steel for pepper and ceramic for salt, while the Electronic and Inverta style mills all feature ceramic mechanisms for salt and pepper. The mechanisms are fully adjustable so they deliver freshly ground pepper or sea salt in fine to coarse grinds. All mechanisms have a lifetime guarantee. Our pepper mechanisms strip the peppercorns to break them into smaller pieces so that flavor is slowly released onto food, rather than crushing the corns and squeezing out the pepperin oils, whereby releasing the flavor very quickly into the atmoshpere. Stainless steel is an ideal material for the pepper mill as it will not corrode and can be made very sharp, giving improved variability of grind. Our standard salt mechanism has a unique anti-static, clog-free design and is molded for high precision with sharp grinding teeth.Nylon is used due to its hard wearing characteristics.Being non-porous, it does not absorb odors and is therefore suitable for salt.
