(More customer reviews)I'm kind of a geek.Ok, I'm a geek. We've had several salt & pepper mills over the years, and each time a set fails, we've tried to look for a set that was a little more durable. Our last set was a really well built and well functioning acylic pair...and then one day the salt grinder portion of the pair just stopped working.Who knew that you needed a special grinder for salt...I didn't.(Think "corrosion.")
So this time I did some research.I basically found that Peugeot has been making salt & pepper grinders since before the Civil War.And I found out that they use different metal in the mechanism of their salt grinders (stainless steel, duh). And finally, I found that Peugeot is generally considered to be the #1 manufacturer of salt and pepper mills.
Once I'd figured out what I wanted to buy, it just came down to choosing between the huge variety of colors and materials. We leave our mills out on the counter, so I didn't want some 14" tall monstrosity sitting out there so I ended up choosing this pair. The 7" size is attractive, without being obtrusive. The natural wood fits with our kitchen (wood cabinetry). The mills grind very well, the coarseness of the grind varies from fairly coarse to very fine and it's easy to adjust.Easy to fill. And the brass knob on the top of each mill is marked with an "S" or a "P" for quick identification.
I took off one star for two reasons:First, I know I wanted a fairly small mill, but you may not be satisfied with the number of peppercorns that it will hold...maybe a quarter to a third of a large grocery store bottle (1-2oz).And second, I really haven't had it long enough to be sure that it will hold up.Maybe I'll come back in five years and give you an update!

Product Description:
PEUGEOT: France, since 1810.Peugeot mills are renowned by chefs and gourmet cooks the word over for the consistent grind results they produce, their incredible resilience and proven reliability.Compromise is not a word that fits into the Peugeot vocabulary. For each spice, there is one - and only one - Peugeot grinding mechanism: peppercorns; coarse dry salt; chilies; herbs and spices; wet salts; and nutmeg.Add the coffee mechanism, which started it all, and there are seven unique Peugeot mechanisms. Each is designed to derive the most flavor and greatest aroma from its complementary spice.Aesthetically pleasing, Peugeot mills deliver the height of quality, durability, reliability and innovation; making these mills the ones to which all others are compared. The high quality beech wood used in Peugeot mills is grown, harvested, dried, shaped and finished in France. For Paris u'Select mills, the grind is adjusted by turning the ring at the bottom of the mill. Turning the ring in one direction makes a finer grind; turning in the other makes it coarser. Once the grind size is set, it will stay in place until the user changes it. The pepper mill is equipped with Peugeot's legendary pepper grinding mechanism.Made of case-hardened steel, it has received additional treatment against wear and corrosion. Its double-row of helix-shaped claws grab and crack each peppercorn, before drawing it down to the teeth for the perfect grind. The salt mill is equipped with Peugeot's exceptional salt grinding mechanism: it is unlike anything else on the market. Its two ribbed plates are made from a stainless steel blend that offers resiliency, rigidity and resistance to corrosion from dry salts. When the mechanism is activated, the ribs work to twist and fracture each salt crystal to the desired size. Both salt and pepper mills are 7-inches tall with a chocolate brown varnish.
