BIA Cordon Bleu Salt Pig - White Review

My boyfriend and I have tried a few salt mills and and were frustrated by how little salt comes out. Admittedly, they weren't one of the nicer salt mills, like Peugeot mills which I'd love to have if I could afford it. Then I remembered watching Nigella Lawson use this on her show and thought it looked very convenient. I did my research and settled on this salt pig for the following reasons:

1. Price- pretty low, lower than the Nigella Lawson brand
2. Shape- it looked more like a traditional salt pig that you'd find in a European manor as opposed to something modern. I'm always worried modern will look old in a few years but traditional will stay classic.
3. Color- white is neutral, in my opinion, so hopefully it will match any kitchen in future homes I may live in
4. Spoon- it had an accompanying spoon which I thought was an added bonus. Some others also had spoons but the spoons would not be of a matching material (Nigella Lawson's spoon is wood) which I thought was odd
5. Company- BIAin San Francisco, I checked their website and they seemed to be reputable and had a range of products that appealed to me.
6. Access to salt- the hole seemed big enough to put a fist through easily to grab some salt out like Nigella does on her show

Now that I have it, I'm very happy with it EXCEPT that it did not meet my #6 expectations. The hole is quite smaller than I wanted it to be, but my boyfriend still raved about it while he was preparing for Thanksgiving dinner. He loves the easy access to salt and insists that he can put his fingers through the hole (and he's got hefty hands) and grab some salt which is all that he can ask for. [Okay, that sounded a bit racy, but I didn't know how else to put it.] Still, I wish I had done my research better and compared the radius of the hole with other salt pigs before settling on one. I think I would have actually paid more for one with a bigger hole. However, a bigger salt pig may also take up more counter space.

One thing to note is that salt pigs are meant for coarse salts or kosher salts. They fair much better being left in the open with moisture than finer grain salt.

Overall, it's great! No more unnecessary salt mill battles while cooking!
